Today it has been confirmed be Deadline Hollywood that Roberto Orci has parted ways with the third installment of the re-imagined Star Trek movie trilogy.
What the hell does this mean for the movie?
As most will already know, Roberto Orci has a finger in a lot of pies. As a writer he wrote the first two Star Trek movies as well as Amazing Spider-Man 2 and fantastical geek TV shows such as Fringe and Alias.
But apparently he won’t be getting his directorial break with Star Trek 3. The reason? Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but the awesome folk at Badass Digest have heard from reliable sources that the main factor was all down to the script.
Apparently: “Paramount shut the production down last month, sending home all the design people while they battled over the direction of the screenplay.”
Not good and an entirely plausible reason for Orci’s departure, but don’t feel TOO sorry for him yet. He’ll stay on as producer.
What next for the third in the Star Trek franchise? As soon as Orci’s departure had been circulated, a number of popular names have attached to take over the role, with the spectacular Edgar Wright at the very top of the list.
Whether there is a genuine link between Star Trek 3 and Wright, it’s as of yet unknown but entirely plausible. Paramount will want to bounce back from this disaster strong and Wright would be the right man for the job, but whether Wright will choose to take the job is another matter entirely.
