With the highly anticipated Suicide Squad quickly approaching, the questions about the film largely remain the same: what’s the deal with the Joker? Will we see an origin story?
In a recent interview, Jared Leto was asked this very question and we have what he said right here.
Awesome or what?

The news comes from an interview conducted with the ever awesome Superhero Hype website, which interviewed the star during the Suicide Squad promotional rounds.
Regarding the Joker, Leto said:
“I don’t think I’m allowed to talk about that so much. But we walked in a completely new direction. I think we knew that we had to do that. It was important to do that. When the Joker has been done and done so well, it gives you a bit of an indication of where you shouldn’t go. There’s a bit of a map there. That’s the good part about it.”
Okay, so this is pretty much going to be the standard reply when asked about his role before the movie is released BUT it does give us a bit of an idea of Leto’s thinking before tackling the role.
It shows that he’s actually thought about the role. It’s not going to be like Jack Nicholson showing up in Joker face paint and basically playing the Joker as a whacky Jack Nicholson with face paint.
But given his mention of there being a map to the character based on previous versions of the Joker, it’s safe to say he’s thought about how to change it to something different, but still capturing the essence of the character. From what we’ve seen of the Joker from the trailers, it’s safe to say he’s on the right track.
Leto went onto say:
“It’s quite an honor. Joker has been written about in pop culture for 75 years. I’m just the latest in the long list of people who have redefined and reinvented this character. The actors, the voice actors, the television series, the writers, the artists and the fans. People have taken the Joker and reinvented and redefined for 75 years. It is really special to be asked to do that.”
I think at this point, his response is pretty standard. He doesn’t want to spoil anything and I think we can all respect that.
I think the main thing we can take from this is that Leto has put a lot of thought into his portrayal of the Joker and that’s something we can look forward to.
Despite the Batman vs Superman largely failing with the critics and the audience, I’m still looking forward to Suicide Squad. I genuinely think it’s going to be a good movie and I think Leto’s Joker will be a large part of that.
