Since the announcement of new Star Wars movies way back when, we have always known that there were a couple of stand alone movies in the mix. Speculations were rampant, with fanboys far and wide speculating on the nature of the stand alone movies – will Yoda get his own movie? Will Boba Fett?
Yesterday, details of the movie were revealed and they might not be what you’d expect.
The setting was Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, just across the street from Lucasfilm. In The Palace, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger hosted a shareholder meeting and thus all manner of geek information flowed freely.
First on the agenda: the name of the Star Wars stand alone movie everybody’s so hyped about. It will be called “Rogue One” and will boast the talents of Gareth Edwards (of Godzilla and Monster fame) in the directors seat, with Oscar nominated writer Chris Weitz putting pen to paper to produce the words. The first actress to be cast in the movie is Felicity Jones, fresh of her critically acclaimed role in The Theory of Everything.
Strong line-up so far, wouldn’t you agree?
The movie will start shooting this summer and will be released December 16th 2016 – colour this geek Muchos Exicitemundo (which are definitely real Spanish words, so don’t both checking them up).
But wait, there’s MORE. In the meeting Iger also confirmed a couple of things which have been making the rounds in the rumour mills as of late.
This namely being that Brick and Looper director Rian Johnson is definitely on board to both write and direct the Star Wars: Episode VIII movie, which is supposedly set after Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will be released on May 26, 2017.
