It seems information and gossip regarding the Spider-Man reboot has hit the ground this week, coinciding with the premiere and press campaign of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
What a coincidence.
Last week, I posted the story regarding Marvel’s shortlist to portray the wall crawler and today I’m hearing rumours about a possible title for the movie.
Also, a new actor has been added to the mix to portray Peter Parker and the campaign for this one is pretty strong.
You NEED to hear this.
I have a theory and it’s an obvious one.
Marvel are pushing out a new movie as we speak and now they’re considering their interests in the future. We KNOW they’ve cut a deal to the rights to Spider-Man and we KNOW he will be a part of the Marvel movie universe – starting with Captain America 3: Civil War.
But because they’re rebooting a popular character so soon, they have to tread lightly. They can’t piss fans off with this one and to be fair, their track record is okay at keeping faboy rage down to a minimum.
So, in that situation what can you do? Market research. Find out what if Marvel are leaking rumours to gauge our reactions? What if our opinions on what WE want for their movies actually MEANS something?
A brave new world, no?
Again it’s just a theory, let’s get along to the REAL gossip.
So I’m hearing from my sources that the Spider-Man stand-alone reboot may already have a title attached to it.
The title was apparently revealed last night by former Latino Review reporter Umberto Gonzales (who is known in the industry for calling things WAY before they happen – whether this one comes to life, we’ll have to wait and find out).
So the title – Are you ready for this? – will be Spider-Man: The New Avenger.
Pretty cool, right? I’m thinking of all connotations that come with such a title and what kind of movie the stand-alone is now set up to be and it’s awesome.
Like for example, I hope we’re going to the epic scene from the New Avengers comic books where Iron Man and Cap try to convince J.Jonah Jameson that Spider-Man is actually one of the good guys and he appears to go with it, before stabbing them all in the back. I love that scene.
I hope this rumour becomes a reality.
Also over the weekend, a new contender to take over the mantle of Spider-Man from Andrew Garfield has emerged.
As I mentioned before, last week I posted a story detailing the top five candidates for the role, which consisted of Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet, and Liam James.
Apparently, Disney star Billy Unger from something called Lab Rats has also made a late play for the role, becoming linked to the movie by appearing on the red carpet for the Avengers: Age of Ultron premiere. After that, fans starting a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #BillyUnger4Spiderman leading the young actor to play down the role in a slightly comedic way (channeling the Spider-man character perhaps?) with a tweet, “I’m not saying I’m SpiderMan.. I’m just saying that no one has ever seen me and SpiderMan in the same room together.”
I’m not too sure about this way. Whilst I can see the appeal for Disney to have one of their “home-grown” stars transition from Disney show to full-blown Marvel movie, the other actors on the list have more experience and therefore more acting chops to take on the role.
I hope they use their heads with this one, I really do.
