No thanks, I'm good. That’s right, Fox are planning to capitalise on their mutants stake in Marvel by making a stand-alone New Mutant movie, which by all intents and purposes will expand the X-Men Universe.
Pretty cool, huh?
The news came yesterday from Deadline and I must admit, I had to do a double-take when i read the title of the new bulletin.
It just wasn’t something I was expecting.
I mean, why would I? I realise that Fox pretty much has the rights to all of Marvel’s mutants at this point, but a New Mutants film wasn’t even on my radar.
As a fan of the comic books, I know who and what they are. I know what the team is and I know it’ll be cool to see.
But what about those people who just love Marvel movies? How are they going to build the hype for this?
It just strikes me as an odd choice.
From a comic book reader’s perspective, it might be inspired. Depending on who exactly will the in the line up of the New Mutants of course.
Why inspired? Because of the original New Mutants line-up (pictured at the top of this article), two of the members are currently in the current roster of The Avengers. Sunspot and Cannonball have been a part of the Avengers since Jonathan Hickman began work on the title (or close enough to it at any rate).
Also, Magik (Colossus’ sister) is in the current X-Men line up and is a very interesting and complex character.
It certainly might shape up to be an interesting movie.
ANYWAY, opinion over. Back to the movie news.
The news came yesterday from Deadline have reported that Fox have penned a deal with The Faults in Our Stars director Josh Boone to co-write and direct the New Mutants stand alone.
An inspired choice, no doubt. Boone came out of nowhere and smashed home The Fault in Our Stars at the box office. Whatever you thought of the movie, put it this way: from a $12 million budget the movie grossed $307 million worldwide.
Simon Kinberg, producer of the of the X-Men expansion movie with Boone said: “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”
