Marvel’s Spider-Man Shortlist Revealed

Secrets | Spider-Man | Marvel

That’s right, Marvel have a short-list of who they want to portray the next Peter Parker / Spider-Man and that list has leaked.

Let’s take a look at the candidates…

Why Does Spider-Man Even Need to Be Re-Cast?

Some of my awesome readers out there might be asking, “Spider-Man? Recast? WTF? Why does this need to happen?”. The long and short of it is: Marvel/Disney wanted to include Spider-Man in their Marvel Movie Universe, BUT they didn’t own the rights to him. Sony do.

Marvel sold the rights to Sony an age ago, before they properly delved into Hollywood and so now they have to cut a deal with Sony in order to use the web-crawler in their movies. Crazy, ain’t it?

Here’s a little diagram depicting Marvel character ownership in case you had any further questions on the matter (NB – since this diagram was created, I think Man-Thing has reverted back to Marvel).

During the recent hacking of Sony and distributing of private emails, it was reported that last October Marvel approached Sony with a deal to get Spider-Man into Captain America 3: Civil War and it looked like it wasn’t a successful bid. Turns out, some kind of deal was struck and Marvel do now have the rights to use him in their movie Universe.

As for the actor who previously portrayed him, Andrew Garfield, it seems he just didn’t fit the mold Marvel were looking for and this list of potential candidates just goes to solidify such speculation.

The Name’s

“OK, I know the history – just get on with the list already!!!”

Okay dude, calm down. Here’s the list.

Interesting stuff, right? Who’s your ideal choice for the role? Tweet me and let me know!

Spider-Man will take part in Anthony and Joe Russo’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War movie, which is scheduled to be released May 6th 2016. Spider-Man will then get his own stand-alone movie after that, pencilled in for a July 28th 2017 release.
