I have a problem with Stranger Things.
There. I said it.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVED the show. But there’s one thing that still bugs the crap outta me and I just can’t let it go.
Stranger Things is a worldwide hit, and rightfully so.
The show is all kinds of awesome; piecing together classic horror and Sci-Fi elements and mashing it all together with a little 80’s nostalgia.
Word of mouth has taken the show into great success and the numbers show it.
According Esquire Magazine, 8.2 million people watched the show in the first 16 days of it being available. To date, only two other shows have beaten this Netflix record: Fuller House and Orange is the New Black.
So let’s put that into perspective: it beat Daredevil, Making a Murderer and House of Cards. Now THAT is the very definition of Netflix success.
Check out the rest of that list below.
We can all agree that Stranger Things is both an awesome and successful show, but let’s get to the point alright: I have a problem with how the show ended (be warned there be spoilers ahead).
It’s a small problem, which happens in one scene and one scene only, but it’s goes against what has already been established in the show so much that it stands out in my mind – and I can’t get it out of there.
It’s the scene where Nancy and Jonathan set a trap for the monster in the house. It’s a perilous moment in which it looks like the monster is going to eviscerate them. Luckily for them, Steve comes back to save the day! He fights off the monster with…a wooden baseball bat, with a nail in it?
Erm. WTF???
A couple of scene’s later, the monster attacks the school in which it cops a shower of bullets. Doesn’t even slow the thing.
But a wooden bat with a nail in it does.
How? How does that make sense?
Could there be something else to it? Possibly.
I spoke with my friends regarding my problem with the series and one of them had a very interesting theory that could potentially explain it.
What if it was a nod towards Stephen King? More specifically, what if it was a nod towards Stephen King’s IT? You see where I’m coming from with this? If not, I’m getting at this: what if the creature was powered by fear?
What if the men firing bullets at the creature were so scared that it powered the creature so much that the bullets had little effect? What if Nancy, Jonathan and Steve’s defiance and courage actually weakened the creature? What if Eleven’s burst of courage at the end (as well as her awesome mental powers) allowed her to deal the final blow?
An interesting theory to fill a bit of plot hole, but for this to be viable surely they should’ve explained/expanded on this a little better, right?
Am I the only one this is bugging the hell out of? What do you think about all of this?
