No thanks, I'm good.Kingsman 2 news! Watch out! For those of you who haven’t seen the movie (and why haven’t you? Go. Now. It’s awesome) there may be Kingsman spoilers in this post.
Are you sure you wanna continue? Okay, let’s go.
The Kingsman was a nice little action-packed surprise of a movie last year and, dare I say, caught a lot people by surprise – including me. And I’d read the comic books.
I felt the movie built upon Mark Millar and Dave Gibbon’s epic comic book and gave the characters a breath of life. I also thought the movie made the who experience a little bit cheesier than the comic book had intended, but I’m good with that. I think it’s what the story needed and that’s to years and years of James Bond, I think the audience expects as much (at least to a certain degree).
However, the reason why I really liked the movie adaptation was the death of…
THIS IS WHERE THE SPOILERS ARE!!!
… Colin Firth’s character. In the comic book, he dies just an ordinary death. Somebody follows him to his room and shoot’s him through the door’s eye hole. That’s it. Nothing spectacular. But I can see why Millar did it that way. Trying to downplay the spy movie deaths we have been fed over the years.
Still, it made me feel empty inside.
In the movie, however, the death was spectacular and I heartily approved of it. But I won’t go into detail here, go watch the movie dammit!
So perhaps now, if you haven’t seen the movie, you can figure out why Colin Firth returning for the sequel is such a strange concept. Is he returning from the dead like all great spies do? Is his involvement in the second movie going to through flashbacks? Does he have a secret twin brother who is in fact evil?
Who knows. At this point, we don’t even have the second iteration of the comic book to go by.
The awesome folks at ScreenRant have previously reported that Millar has expressed his desire for Firth to return for Kingsman 2.
“A lot of people are very upset that Colin might not be in the sequel but I’m coming up with ideas at the moment. If people buy tickets in America, I’ve got a feeling we’ll figure out a way for having Colin back.”
Now, in an update from ScreenRant, Millar has states:
“That’s the conversation everyone’s having right now, because part of what made that movie work is Colin. Colin’s fantastic, it was a two-hander, that film. You also want to have the integrity of the story, so if you are bringing him back, it has to make sense. That’s where it is at at the moment. Beats of the story have been done. [Screenplay co-writers] Matthew [Vaughn] and Jane [Goldman] are working on it at the moment. Some things have to be worked out, some decisions have still to be made and everything, so it’s all fairly amorphous, but all going well.”
“It’s funny because there’s a lot of conversations like that, like should he have an evil brother, Colin with a mustache? Or is he a ghost or whatever? The guys have a plan. I can’t spoil it just now because the final decision is still to be made. It’ll be good. Vaughan’s funny. He’s done Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, and Kingsman. Even Spielberg had made 1941 by his third movie, so I trust him. He’s done five good movies.”
Pretty awesome, right? Bring on Kingsman 2!
