Great news Batman fans. It seems Warner Bros aren’t kidding around with The Killing Joke and the animated movie has been officially handed a R rating in the US.
I reckon this means we’re getting a true adaptation and it’s probably not going to pull any punches.
Can you say awesomeo?
The report comes from Entertainment Weekly who say Warner Bros home entertainment division have told them directly of the rating.
“From the start of production, we encouraged producer Bruce Timm and our team at Warner Bros. Animation to remain faithful to the original story — regardless of the eventual MPAA rating,” said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation & Warner Digital Series, in a statement.
“The Killing Joke is revered by the fans, particularly for its blunt, often-shocking adult themes and situations. We felt it was our responsibility to present our core audience — the comics-loving community — with an animated film that authentically represented the tale they know all too well.”
Good on them, I say.
For those of you unaware of The Killing Joke storyline, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but let’s just say Same Register is right – it DOES deal with some very adult themes and any decent animated adaptation of the graphic novel would absolutely require an R rating. This definitely isn’t a cartoon you take your kids to folks.
Batman: The Killing Joke will have it’s premiere at Comic-Con this summer and features the vocal talents of the awesome Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as The Joker.
