The Graphic Novel was first published on 29th March 1988 and has been in print ever since.
The graphic novel was written by legendary comic book writer Alan Moore (Watchmen/Extraordinary League of Gentlemen), with art from Brian Bolland.
When this story was first conceived by Moore, it was supposed to take place outside of the mainstream continuity.
In his book “The Art of Brian Bolland”, Bolland states that his version of The Joker was partly conceived after watching the 1928 movie “The Man Who Laughs” (based on the Victor Hugo novel – see character headshot above).
At the time of publication, Barbara Gordon had already retired her Batgirl alter ego. After the events of The Killing Joke, she adopts a new secret identity: Oracle.
The Killing Joke was given to Heath Ledger to be used as inspiration for his role as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight
The Killing Joke Animated Movie was be the last time Mark Hamill lends his vocal talents to the role of The Joker, but after making this statement he and Kevin Conroy (vocal talent of the animated Batman) agreed to do Justice League Action.
The Killing Joke Animated movie was scheduled for a straight to video release, but overwhelming popularity have convinced Warner Bros to do a limited Theatrical release.
It will be DC comics second ever R rated movie. The first was Watchmen.
The Animated Movie was originally planned for 2009, but after The Watchmen didn’t do so great in the Box Office, it was decided to delay the project. They believed this to be down to the R rating.
The movie will have a 15 minute prologue focusing on Batgirl and will emphasize her important in the story.
The Killing Joke title was influenced by a British band Killing Joke who were formed in 1978.
