DON’T PANIC! Okay? Deadpool gets banned in CHINA, okay? CHINA. We cool?
The news broke yesterday by The Hollywood Reporter and, if I’m honest, I have mixed feelings about the whole situation.
My first reaction was “FUCK YEAH!” because I figured that the Deadpool movie MUST be the Deadpool movie the fans have been craving for years. It’s so violent, it’s so offensive it’s been banned by an entire country. Just awesome.
But the more I thought about it, the more I worried for the movie. After all, China is a HUGE share of the market for some movies. In fact, it’s the second largest theatrical market these days. Avengers: Age of Ultron grossed $240 million for its release.
My worry is, we get another Dredd situation on our hands. For those of you who haven’t seen Dredd (shame on you), the Dredd situation is basically that a completely awesome movie gets made, loved by fans and casual observers alike, but it doesn’t get much in commercial success. It doesn’t bomb, it just doesn’t make enough money for the movie studio to bother making any more.
Infuriating.
There is, of course, the chance that they’ll alter the movie in someway in order to get past the Chinese censors – the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT for short) – but judging by what we’ve seen from the trailers, that might be watering the movie down some and the question arises: will that affect the oversea sales too?
I sure as hell hope not, because i already know I want a damned sequel.
