Comic Book Movie News: Justice League Dark, Guardians of the Galaxy & Sandman

Guardians of the Galaxy | Marvel | Teepublic

Comic Book Movie News alert folks!

A couple of news snippets circulated the interwebs yesterday evening, some good news, some bad (depending on how you look at it) but all must-know geek information I can assure you.

Strap yourselves in for a bumpy ride.

Justice League Dark

First the bad news, The Hollywood Reporter are reporting that Guillermo del Toro has left the Justice League Dark (JLD) project.

Most will already know that JLD was basically del Toro’s brain child from the outset, discussing the project with passion in several interviews and the director was the perfect choice to helm the magical and horror based group of heroes too. It was a match made in heaven, so why would he leave?

As of yet, that is unclear. The Hollywood Reporter simply state that del Toro is “no longer attached to the project” but nothing has yet been confirmed.

Perhaps it has something to do with the director’s busy schedule? As we know, his main focus is for his movie Crimson Peak later this year and then Pacific Rim 2 for summer 2017 – maybe the man had too much on his plate?

This is some really bad news. JLD has an array of interesting characters to play with – characters which I believe del Toro would have gotten the best out of. Also, who knows where this leaves the movie – will Warner Bros even continue with the movie without him?

Guardians of the Galaxy 2

More uplifting comic book movie news, the second Guardians of the Galaxy movie now has a title. Check out James Gunn’s twitter announcement:

Yes, the official title for the @Guardians sequel is GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. Nice detective work, @colliderfrosty, etc! You got us!

— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) June 29, 2015

That’s right, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will actually have the title of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. Okay. Alright. At first I was thinking “what the hell???” (as I’m sure some of you are) but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.

The entire anchor point for the first movie was the Mix Tap Right? Awesome Mix Vol.1. At the end of the movie, he gets a second mix tape which was an iconic symbol to start the next chapter of his life and to set up the second movie. The mix tape was called Awesome Mix Vol.2, so you can see where they’re going with this right?

It’s a perfect title for the second installment in my opinion.

Sandman and Vertigo Comics movie to New Line

Let me break it down for you: Warner Bros owns DC Comics and currently handles all movie distribution rights for the brand. HOWEVER, Vertigo comics are also owned by DC Comics (and therefore Warner Bros) and have the rights to distribute Vertigo based comic books (such as the iconic Sandman character).

However, Deadline are reporting that Warner Bros main studio has decided they have their hands full with superhero movies at the moment and so have handed over the work to another one of their subsidiary companies New Line Cinema. A positive step forward, right?

That means that the one major project (that we know about) on the books at Vertigo / New Line, The Sandman won’t have to sit in the ‘pile’ at Warner Bros and New Line can take a fresh look at the project. Sandman currently has the considerable skills of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Neil Gaiman, Jack Thorne and David S Goyer working on the project, so I’m majorly hyped about this going forward – I’ll keep an eye on this and let you know all about it.

What do you think?
