Marvel Approached Sony to Get Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War

Spider-man | Marvel Comic Books

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you will be well aware that recently Sony were hacked and data released publicly on the interwebs.

Well, today it has come to light that there’s proof of Marvel having conversations with Sony in order to get Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.

Hacking

Initially, it was thought that North Korea was the party responsible for hacking Sony over – if you can believe this – the Seth Rogen and James Franco movie, The Interview. The pair play characters who run a popular tabloid show who are approached by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, which leader to the North Koreans threatening action.

Today, it has been reported that the FBI have come up wanting for evidence connecting the hacking incident with the North Korean’s, but that’s neither here nor there. What there is evidence for, however, is that Marvel wanted Spider-Man for the third movie of the Captain America trilogy.

Discussions

The Wall Street Journal today revealed extensive emails from both studio bigwigs discussing a potential deal.

In an Oct. 30 e-mail, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad tells Ms. Pascal about a potential scenario that would see Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains “creative control, marketing and distribution.”

In a separate e-mail, Ms. Pascal tells a business partner that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in its planned third “Captain America” movie. […]

The talks with Marvel eventually broke down and Sony is now planning to go ahead with its own Spider-Man slate, according to people familiar with the matter.

I’m quite disappointed that this movie didn’t pay off for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it would just be awesome to see Spider-Man back in a Marvel movie interacting with other Marvel characters.

Secondly, for those who have read the comic books behind the Captain America: Civil War, you’ll know that the Spider-Man was an integral part of the story. He acted as the conscience of the superhero community, starting siding with Iron Man and then realising that Captain America’s cause was the right cause.
