No thanks, I'm good. The first wave of reviews are coming in for The Suicide Squad movie…and they’re not great.
I had high hopes for this movie.
I love the whole concept of the Suicide Squad and always have. I read the comic books and absolutely adored them. I watched the rather fantastical Warner Bros animated movie “Assault on Arkham” and I absolutely loved it.
So when the Suicide Squad movie was announced, I was hyped. When the cast and the character information began to leak, I was even more hyped. When the story concept and the inclusion of The Joker and Batman was released, I was INCREDIBLY hyped.
Then came the marketing. I loved it. It was VERY good. I suppose I should’ve guessed the fate of the movie from that alone.
I’ve noticed throughout the years that, more often than not, if the movie studio know they have a so/so movie they’ll hype the hell out of it. They’ll get the movie in everyone’s minds and hope for a killer opening weekend.
They could still get that. I actually think the movie will have a strong opening weekend.
But they probably won’t get critical acclaim – initial Suicide Squad reviews are already flooding in.
Rotten Tomatoes are already pulling a 35% on their Tomatometer after 68 reviews.
David Edelstein, a critic who writes for New York Magazine and Vulture, says Suicide Squad is, “The year’s most muddled piece of storytelling.”.
Mary Reinstein, a critic for US Weekly, comments, “David Ayer’s flash-and-dash directing style makes it a challenge to follow the story, not to mention a chore to process the onslaught of violence.”
I think it’s safe to say, the most negative aspect of the movie is the story. Could we have another Batman vs Superman style story-telling on our hands?
To paint a fair picture, there is also a positive credited critic Suicide Squad review from comingsoon.net‘s Alan Cerny, who says, “DC’s Suicide Squad is rough and jagged, but still entertains. Will Smith, Margot Robbie and the rest of the actors give good performances.”
But even that’s not exactly glowing.
Conversely, the IMDB ratings for Suicde Squad are telling a different story.
The movie is already pulling a 8.6 rating from over 7,500 ratings.
However, with the UK and US opening dates set for the 5th, I don’t see how so many people could’ve posted that rating. Sure, it’s had it’s New York premiere already, but it’s only scheduled for widespread release starting today (it’ll hit Europe first).
Hmmm. Strange.
I imagine the movie will be a lot like Batman vs Superman in a lot of respects. I suspect they’ve tried to cram in as much story as they can, but due to time constraints perhaps haven’t fleshed out some of the idea’s as well as they could have and that’s leading people to be overly critical.
Maybe some of the negative Suicide Squad reviews were expecting a modern Casablanca from the movie, but I have more realistic expectations.
It’s a superhero movie. It will be action-packed. It will most definitely be extremely violent. It will cram as much story in as it can during the 2 hours 3 minutes run time.
More importantly, I think it’ll be fun.
I’m going to go watch it – what about you guys?
