No thanks, I'm good.It has been confirmed: Neil Blomkamp’s new Alien movie will ignore ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Alien: Resurrection’.
July 18th will mark 30 years since James Cameron’s epic sequel Aliens hit the cinema and to celebrate such an event, San Diego Comic-Con will host an Aliens reunion on 23rd July.
According to Entertainment Weekly:
Both Cameron and Weaver will participate in the Q&A in the 6,500-seat Hall H, along with producer Gale Anne Hurd, Bill “Game Over” Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, Michael Biehn, and the all-grown-up Carrie Henn.
Man o man, I’d love to be at THAT event.
In the same EW article they reveal the lowdown on where the new Alien movie will fit in the current cannon.
Not only is it a look back at a sci-fi classic, but Weaver is working with District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp to create a new Aliens sequel, one that picks up where Cameron’s film left off and somewhat de-canonizes David Fincher’s Alien 3 (1992) and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Alien: Resurrection (1997).
Weaver says:
“It’s just as if, you know, the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to Neill’s movie.”
That is of course if Blomkamp is ever allowed to finish the project. With Ridley Scott’s Prometheus prequel Alien: Convenant taking precedence, Blomkamp’s Alien movie has taken a bit of a back burner. However, Weaver has previously stated that it’s still happening and this tidbit follows right along with that.
I get why they’re doing it. Aliens was a REALLY good sequel and people absolutely loved it, but when Alien 3 came around people generally considered it a terrible movie. Alien: Resurrection fared even worse, despite Ron Perlman’s sheer awesomeness.
Personally, I kinda liked Alien 3. I thought it had a decent story and a really good cast. The problem I had with it was the sweeping under the carpet of the other two survivors (three if you count Bishop). I thought it was a waste and I wanted them to do more with the characters. I think that’s precisely why I’m looking forward to Blomkamp’s new Alien movie which look to address this.
All in all, I’m looking forward to Blomkamp’s take on the Alien franchise much more than Scott’s and I REALLY hope it still goes ahead.
