Brace yourself Tony Stark fans.

Marvel announced yesterday that the Marvel universe will be getting a brand new Iron Man – is this mean the end of the Stark legacy?

Who is the new Iron Man

The new Iron Man is a 15 year old girl who goes by the name of Riri Williams. Already being introduced in the pages of Invincible Iron Man earlier this year, Williams will break out of the Marvel Civil War II event as the new Iron Man.

As Marvel’s announcement page puts it:

Reverse-engineering her own set of armor to make the world a better place, Riri will lead the charge as Iron Man! Well, for now. She’s working on the name! But what has become of Tony Stark? What could have happened during Civil War II to make him hang up the repulsors? That is, if he makes it out in one piece!

Riri Williams is the new Iron Man

Williams will star in her own Invincible Iron Man title which is scheduled to hit stores this fall, penned by the legend Brian Michael Bendis and will test incoming artist Stefano Caselli.

“We’re in the middle of a very big Tony Stark storyline – actually three storylines converging,” Bendis tells TIME “His best friend died, his company is collapsing and he’s finding out who his biological parents were all at the same time. How that all shakes out such that Tony is no longer in the armor? You’ll have to wait to find out for the end of Civil War II. But it does create a path for Riri Williams, who Tony will know and will be interacting with very shortly in the comics.”

Thoughts and Gripes

My first thought on the subject is, what are Marvel doing? Tony Stark’s Iron Man is arguably one of their hottest attractions. He’s making them money, so why try to replace him?

I guess with Stark’s compelling storyline regarding his parents or, more accurately, the people he always thought were his parents, Marvel can see they don’t necessarily need him to armour up to draw.

But with the ominous comments on the Marvel website speculating what will happen to Stark during Civil War II, I’m wondering whether they’d just kill him off. I doubt it. I think they might leave him a broken man, but whole kill a popular superhero to draw more money is past it’s sell by date and I can’t see them going down that route.

My second thought was, I’m not sure I want a different Iron Man. I hate change and don’t appreciate Marvel messing with my world. But after reading Bendis talk about the new character in the Time article I’m getting a behind the idea a little more.

What do you think?
