Deadpool 2: The Perfect Sequel Blueprint

Deadpool 2 hasn’t yet been confirmed, but we all know it’s going to happen, right? So the question then becomes, will the studio mess it up royally?

Deadpool screenwriters, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, were more than happy to outline some of the finer pointers for their idea of a sequel.

Do they have the perfect blueprint for a sequel?

Deadpool 2: Not confirmed, but enter Cable

It’s worth noting at this point that a sequel for Deadpool has yet to be confirmed by Fox, despite the after credit scene. However, given the overwhelming box office success of Deadpool, I suspect it’s only a matter of time before a sequel is confirmed and scheduled. Not even Fox are THAT clueless…right guys? RIGHT???

ANYWAY, just the other day the Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick sat down with Hitfix and discussed a good number of things. One of those things was how Cable would fit into the ‘hypothetical’ Deadpool 2.

“There’s a lot of fun in that he’s very serious and he does take on more serious weighty issues than Deadpool’s used to taking on, so I think there’s a juxtaposition there that can be fun,” Reese said.

“We had a lot of fun with Colossus in the first movie, just by virtue of him being a foil to Deadpool, being a goody-two-shoes and a straight shooter and Deadpool being irreverent. And I think Cable offers us the opportunity to provide another really cool, different foil for Deadpool.”

So basically, just a different character playing the virtually the same character? I get the dynamic and I think it’s fantastic and works, but I would like Cable to be a little more integral to the story line than Colossus was in the first.

Deadpool 2 Budget

With overwhelming success of Deadpool in the box office, a sequel could easily demand a sizeable budget for the movie makers to run wild, but Wernik doesn’t really want that.

“We don’t want to make a $200 million epic superhero Deadpool movie. We want to make the $50 million Deadpool sequel. And I think people tapped into this being a character piece, you know?”

“This was a movie about a broken character, a broken guy who’s just trying to make his way in the world, and I think we’re gonna continue that moving forward.”

Which is certainly an excellent standpoint. There’d be no point in throwing a stupid budget at the movie, if they’re just going to strip the essence of the character and the first movie out of it.

Deadpool 2 Character

I think the Deadpool sequel will have to stick to the character not only to be a financial success, but the movie everybody wants to see.

The writers seems to have the same mindset. When asked about Deadpool 2 upping the stakes, Wernik said “I think it goes against who the character is. You know, Deadpool wants to save himself, he doesn’t want to save the world. You know, he’s not lifting cities up or fighting alien invasions.”

Do they have a blueprint to success?

It’s too soon to tell at this point, but judging by the way the writers are talking there’s a very good chance of it. They don’t want to veer too far away from the elements that made the first movie so successful and THAT is the best idea they could possibly have at this point.

Let’s just up hope it pans out the way everyone wants it to.
