It has been just over a month since I was first able to cats my eyes on the sheer epicness (totally not a real word) that is Star Wars The Force Awakens.
I loved the movie; hell, I put it up there in the rankings as my second favourite Star Wars movie of all time.
But there was ONE thing that really bugged me about the movie and I was hoping you’d help me, at best understand it, or at worst get over it.
You game? Then let’s go – but be warned: there be spoilers in this post!
Speaking with my friends and reading what other people have to say about the movie, a lot of people were getting caught up with the whole Kylo Ren side punching thing.
If you’re unfamiliar with this, it’s the scene where Ren begins to fight Finn in the forest. At various intervals, Ren is seen punching himself in the side and a lot of people were like “what just happened there?”, others missed it entirely and were like “how did Finn almost win a lightsabre fight with a Sith apprentice?”
They missed the point entirely. The side-punching thing was obviously a plot device used to help the audience remember that Ren took a big hit from Chewie’s crossbow about 5 or 10 minutes before. Hell, they even built up the power of the crossbow throughout the movie too.
That was the reason for the side-punching AND Finn’s ability to keep up the pace. Though some people quite understandably still see that as a major flaw as Finn was basically a janitor before turning traitor, so being able to keep up with even an injured Ren was not all that believable to some.
I get that, but I have to say it didn’t bug me as much as what happened at the beginning of this same very scene.
Let me set the scene. Kylo Ren has just found Finn and Rey in the forest and the battle is about to commence. Then it happens.
Okay first off, I get why Ren was there. He wanted to eliminate Rey because she had the potential to be a Jedi and if he’s just killed his own father then he’s sure as hell not going to let a Jedi leave without stabbing them up a couple of times with his lightsabre.
My annoyance is solely Ren shouting “traitor” at the top of voice at Finn. I mean, why? He’s a Sith Lord in training, why does he care about a Stormtrooper going Rogue? I get that having a Stormtrooper turn traitor may give others ideas or whatever, but why does Ren care? He’s a big scary, Sith to be? He should have just strut into that forest and took Finn out with a force push or whatever.
So it comes down to this: from the character they’ve already built up throughout the movie, I thought it was entirely out of character for him to react like that to lowly former-stormtrooper. Why would he even care? I just don’t get it.
Do you? If you have any theories or anything that could make this even vaguely believable for me? Do you have any gripes about the movie? Get in touch via Twitter or Facebook or just sign-up to the giveaway below – you can email me from there.
