Captain America Civil War: How it should play out

Captain America | Avengers | Teeturtle

Captain America Civil War is Marvel’s next movie and it’s arguably one of the most anticipated. It will pit hero against hero in Marvel’s most ambitious movie to date AND we already have details on which hero will be on each side.

Captain America Civil War: The Background

Leading up each side of the Marvel movie universe superhero civil war are Captain America and Tony Stark – just like the comic books. However, as far as the teams are concerned, there’s a vast difference between the comic book Civil War story line and the Marvel Movie Universe version.

Cap’s team consists of The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Sharon Carter, Falcon and Hawkeye. A respectable, if not terribly powerful team.

Iron Man’s team, however, is out this world. War Machine, Black Widow, Vision and The Black Panther make up THAT roster.

Does Cap even have a chance against that? I presume so. After all, it’s HIS movie.

But what about Thor and The Hulk?

We’ve known for quite some time that Thor will not be in this movie, he’ll fighting giant serpents in Asgard or some such. But the Hulk? The Hulk is a different story.

News broke quite a while ago stating that the Hulk will be in the movie, even if the actor portraying the puny Bruce Banner, Mark Ruffalo, may not. And I was cool with that, because I have an awesome idea of how I would’ve started Captain America: Civil War (but we’ll get to that).

This past Friday, however, Mark Ruffalo burst all of our Hulk bubbles by revealing The Hulk had been cut from the movie – and I think that’s a damned shame. Here’s why.

My Awesome Idea of How to Start Captain America Civil War

In the Comic Books, the Civil War storyline starts like this: The New Warriors a group of heroes currently doing a reality TV show based on their adventures, target a house of supervillains. A fight ensues and one of the villains, Nitro, activates his powers and explodes. He kills a lot of innocent people and The New Warriors kinda get the blame for it.

The government acts, with the help of Tony Stark, to introduce the Registration act. Cap rebels because he thinks it’s fundamentally wrong. The Superheroes take sides and the war begins.

The movie isn’t going to go down that route. Those superheroes and supervillains who ultimately start the Civil War aren’t established in the Marvel Movie Universe yet and it would be kinda stupid for them to be introduced just for this.

So what options does that leave you? Obviously a few, but I like my idea the best (why wouldn’t I – I’m awesome).

I’d have Captain America Civil War start like this: The Hulk is rampaging through New York. The government send General Ross in first to try to stop him, but inevitably this just makes things MUCH worse.

Cap’s new team of Avengers get called in next, but by that point there is no consoling the monster – he’s too far gone. The Avengers barely manage to stop the Hulk (with the help of Spider-Man, who turns up to join the fight) and it’s a traumatic incident all round. Iron Man feels guilty that he couldn’t better help is friend and also still has the Ultron incident at the back of his mind. Cap is more pissed off that, due to government red tape, they didn’t get called in to deal with The Hulk first. He feels they would have a better chance.

So what would they do with The Hulk? The Government and Tony Stark are concerned that they cannot control the beast, whilst Cap is confident Banner can get control of his demons and Monster.

Tony and the Government reason that there is no prison built which can hold the Monster, so Stark comes up with an idea. It comes from guilt and even though it kills him, he believes that sending The Hulk into space is the only sure-fire way of eliminating the threat for good. The Government are into it, Cap is not.

They do it and The Hulk is sent away (paving the way for a Planet Hulk stand-alone).

Now they have to deal with the aftermath of The Hulk’s destruction and the public are looking for something to be done about the superheroes and the power they wield. Then Government Henry Gyrich (who I think Martin Freeman will be playing) talks to Tony Stark about putting he and his superheroes in check. Stark agrees with him as he’s still feeling guilty about Ultron and how many deaths he was ultimately responsible for.

Stark comes to Cap with the idea, but Cap is not only against but it suspects foul play all around. He doesn’t believe Banner lost control and Hulked out without provocation and doesn’t trust Gyrich (after Hydra’s infiltration of SHIELD, he’s still a little paranoid) and begins to investigate the whole thing. During his investigation, he stumbles across The Winter Soldier and the Ant-Man post-credit scene plays out.

Gyrich and Stark take their proposal of “Sanctions” to regulate and control the Superheroes to the Government, who are quick to act. They want a “quick win” and with all the superhero resentment thanks to The Hulk, they believe it will sway the public to their favour. They rush through the law.

Cap and Stark clash over the law and sides are shown. Fights ensue.

Cap uses Ant-Man to infiltrate Gyrich and discovers that he was responsible for getting the Government to send in the army BEFORE the Avengers to stop the Hulk. After more digging and infiltrating, Ant-Man discovers that Baron Zemo is in fact behind it all. He’s used stolen technology from Wakanda (which is the reason The Black Panther is drawn into the conflict) to prompt banner to turn into the Hulk AND to make him angrier.

But Gyrich doesn’t know he’s working for Zemo and when the truth is revealed, he’s horrified. Gyrich and the Heroes unite to fight off the threat.

At the end of it all, Stark feels worse than ever. Not only did he unleash Ultron onto the world, be he’s now sent his best friend off into space.

He turns to drink.
