No thanks, I'm good. We’ve been promised a Ghostbuster revisiting for quite some time Over the years, the original cast have been linked with a return to the beloved characters on more than one occasion, with firm plans almost materialising a couple of years back. Only that time, it was original member Bill Murray who was resistant to the idea.
Then original director Ivan Reitman pulled out and then, sadly, Harold Ramis passed away.
At that point, I wanted all talks of a new Ghostbusters movie to stop and I think the rest of the geek world was right behind me.
Sadly, that wasn’t then end.
Back in mid-February of this year, there was something an uproar in the geek and cult movie world when it was revealed that the new Ghostbusters movie would have an all-female cast starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnion.
I was annoyed about it too. I hate it when Hollywood mess with classic movies and re-make them in a mostly half-assed way. Also, I didn’t like the way they were messing with the concept of the film; it worked well as it was, that’s WHY it was classed as a classic movie.
Objectively, the cast itself isn’t as offensive as it could have been and at least a few of them have earned their comedic chops from SNL much like some of the original cast; truth be told, I quite liked the parallels.
But the news didn’t stop there.
Yesterday it was announced that yet another Ghostbusters movie is in the works, with an all-male cast that rivals the girls. A lot of journalists out there are screaming for equal rights and writing questioning articles, demanding to know why the girls just can’t have their own movie.
But there’s more. The all-male movie has original director Ivan Reitman behind it as the producer, with Channing Tatum joining him as both producer and, if rumours are true, one of the lead roles.
Now I can understand why there’s a lot of backlash regarding Channing Tatum’s involvement. For some years he’s mostly done brainless action movies or substance-less rom-coms, but his work on 21 and 22 Jump Street has proven to me he’s got some comedic acting chops. Also, his cameo in This is The End show an actor who doesn’t take himself too seriously, despite what opinion’s of him might be.
Beyond that Geek’s may take some solace in knowing that Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier and Community directors Anthony and Joe Russo are currently attached to the movie to direct. Honestly, I love their work and their attachment to the project make me think this isn’t going to be as bad as everyone’s making out.
Today, however, come further updates from the rumour mill, with Guardians of the Galaxy’s and Park and Rec’s Chris Pratt being linked to the movie. He hasn’t exactly signed on the dotted line yet, but he has been targeted. The Badass Digest suggests that one major contributing factor to Pratt’s involvement (other than he’s hot right now and everyone wants a piece of him) is the chemistry between real-life friends Channing Tatum and Pratt and that’s something the movie-makers want to explore.
And the news doesn’t stop there.
Further reports are suggesting that there are actually FOUR Ghostbuster movies on the cards. One being Paul Feig’s all-female cast, another being the Tatum-Pratt headlined one, a crossover and potentially a prequel. A prequel to these new ones or the original’s, I have no idea.
Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters movie is scheduled to be released on 22nd July 2016, with the new Tatum one scheduled to start production at some point in 2017.
Phew. That was some round-up.
I realise at this point, if you’re still with me, there’s a lot of information to take in – but what do you think about it all? Are you eager to see a revival of the Ghosbusters? Are you happy with the cast?
