That’s right, Iron Man 3 could’ve had a different villain altogether, but according to director Shane Black, they were banned.
Who? Why? WHAT?!?!
Recently writer/director Shane Black sat down with Uproxx for an interview. That conversation led to talk of Iron Man 3 and villains that never were.
And it isn’t exactly going to help Marvel’s problem with female leads (despite the fact that the main hero of Iron Man 3 was Pepper Potts – but I don’t want to get into that right now).
Whilst promoting his new move Nice Guys, Shane Black talked about Iron Man 3 and how his was banned from his original choice villain because Marvel were worried the action figures wouldn’t sell.
“We replaced a lot of things,” Black said. “The plot went this way and that way. Stéphanie Szostak’s character was bigger at one point and we reduced it. Rebecca Hall’s character was bigger at one point and we reduced it.”
So not one, but two female cast members were supposed to have larger roles. Oh dear, Marvel. Oh dear.
Black was quick to say who the culprit wasn’t , “Now, that’s not [Marvel Studios president Kevin] Feige.” It was allegedly “Marvel Corporate” who made the decision. I totally buy it too, Feige doesn’t seem that type of asshole to me.
“I don’t know if it was Ike, I don’t know who it was,” he said. “They never told me who made the decision, we just got that memo one day and it was about toy sales. That’s all I know.”
